Sometimes, due to trauma, falls, motor vehicle injuries, or heavy physical activity, the pieces of cartilage that act as cushions between our bones called the “disc” become compressed. This compression squeezes on the cartilage known as the anulus fibrosis, causing it to “bulge” into the nerve space. Sometimes the bulge can herniate or extrude into the spinal cord, leading to heavy amounts of improper pressure being placed on the nervous system. This incorrect pressure on the nerves in the area causes the nervous system to send a warning signal, commonly referred to as pain, tingling, numbness, and sometimes weakness to the corresponding area that the nerve communicates with.
